● The IRAD(x) series manufactured by Index Elektro BV is a line of explosion-proof cable glands engineered for armoured cables in hazardous environments.
● These glands are designed in compliance with the ATEX Directive 94/9/EC and relevant EN standards, including EN 60079-0, EN 60079-1, EN 60079-7, and EN 60079-31.
● They are certified for applications in Zone 1, Zone 2 (gases) and Zone 21, Zone 22 (dusts), with both Ex d and Ex e protection modes, as well as Ex tb for dust-tight protection.
CERTIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS COMPLIANCE
● ATEX Certification Code: ISSeP 10 ATEX 034X
● Protection markings: ● II 2G Ex d I/IIC Gb
● II 2G Ex e I/IIC Gb
● III 2D Ex tb IIIC Db IP66
● Applicable zones:
● Zone 1 and 2 for explosive gas atmospheres
● Zone 21 and 22 for explosive dust atmospheres
● Conformity to ISO 9001 standards for manufacturing
● Designed to comply with IEC 60079-14 installation requirements
MATERIAL OPTIONS AND THREAD TYPES
● The IRAD(x) series is available in the following material configurations:
● B – Brass
● N – Nickel-plated brass
● S – Stainless steel 316
● Thread types supported: ● Metrical (M) – Ranges from M16 to M90
● NPT (N) – Ranges from 3/8″ to 3″
● The exact model code includes material and thread specifications, e.g., IRAD1BNM20 refers to a nickel-plated brass double compression gland with M20 threading.
SEALING TEMPERATURE RANGES
● EPDM sealing rings: –40 °C to +100 °C
● Silicone sealing rings: –70 °C to +220 °C
● Maximum surface temperature: T95°C (as marked on glands)
DEGREE OF PROTECTION AND APPLICATION
● Ingress protection: IP66, ensuring full dust-tightness and powerful water jet resistance
● Application: ● Specifically designed for armoured cables
● Recommended for use in enclosures requiring flameproof (Ex d) or increased safety (Ex e) cable entries
● Complies with mining, petrochemical, offshore, and industrial standards
● Note: Not suitable for Zone 0 applications
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR IRAD(x) GLANDS
For flameproof (Ex d) applications:
● Ensure the gland is screwed at least five full turns into the enclosure’s threaded entry
● Always verify that thread engagement is secure and compliant with the enclosure’s certification
● Follow IEC 60079-14 cable entry requirements strictly
Step-by-step procedure:
- Preparation:
● Unpack the gland in a clean environment.
● Verify all parts are undamaged and correspond to the intended thread and material. - Cable preparation:
● Strip the outer sheath of the cable carefully.
● Cut the armouring to expose between 6 and 10 mm of metal braid or wire armour. - Assembly:
● Insert the cable through the gland body.
● Position the stripped section so that the armour sits cleanly between the gland’s internal conical compression rings.
● Tighten the gland’s head to lock the cable securely in place. - Middle compression:
● Tighten the central part of the gland to compress the armour and ensure electrical continuity (if applicable). - Final sealing:
● For barrier glands, inject the two-component resin compound after the cable has been wired into the terminal enclosure.
● Allow sufficient time for the resin to cure fully before energizing the system. - Inspection:
● Ensure no part of the cable sheath protrudes beyond the compression seals.
● Check the tightness of all gland parts.
● Confirm that the cable gland is fully seated and sealed.
OPERATIONAL AND MAINTENANCE NOTES
● Cable glands must be periodically checked for:
● Tightness and secure fixing
● Damage to metal parts or seals
● Environmental degradation (especially in offshore or corrosive zones)
● Replace components only with original Index Elektro BV spare parts.
● Resin-filled glands must not be reopened after curing.
DISPOSAL AND END-OF-LIFE CONSIDERATIONS
● Dispose of metal components following national metal recycling standards.
● Follow applicable local regulations for chemical compounds (resin residues).
● Index Elektro BV provides support for special disposal requirements upon request.
