2025.08.10 – DEAN SCHNEIDER: FROM SWISS BANKER TO WILDLIFE CONSERVATION HERO

A Life-Changing Decision in the World of Wildlife

Dean Schneider, born in Switzerland, began his career in the fast-paced world of finance. But his passion for wildlife conservation and animal rescue was stronger than any corporate success. In 2017, Dean made the life-altering choice to leave his comfortable urban life, sell his possessions, and move to South Africa to follow his dream.

That dream became Hakuna Mipaka, a lion sanctuary and wildlife haven whose name means “No Limits” in Swahili.

Hakuna Mipaka: A Sanctuary Without Cages

Spanning 400 hectares, Hakuna Mipaka Oasis is home to rescued animals, many of them born in captivity and unable to return to the wild. This private wildlife sanctuary in South Africa offers them a safe and natural environment where they can live with freedom and dignity.

Unlike a zoo, Hakuna Mipaka is not open to the public. Its mission is not tourism, but animal welfare, habitat preservation, and public education about wildlife protection.

The Lion Pride and Animal Family

Dean Schneider lives side by side with his animal “family”, forming bonds that inspire millions around the world. His sanctuary residents include:

  • Lions: Dexter, Nayla, Leo, Snow, Khaleesi, Kiara
  • Hyena: Chuckie
  • Cheetahs: Kobe and Madiba
  • Monkeys: Momo and JJ
  • Others: Pumba the pig, raccoons, antelopes, snakes, iguanas, and various birds

These relationships are built on trust, respect, and ethical animal interaction, making Hakuna Mipaka a unique example of human-wildlife coexistence.

Mission and Philosophy: “We Protect What We Love”

Dean’s guiding principle is simple: “We protect what we love.” His approach to animal conservation focuses on emotional connection. He believes that when people truly understand and love animals, they will take action to protect them.

Through wildlife photography, social media videos, and storytelling, Dean brings people closer to the world of lions, cheetahs, and other African wildlife.

The Reality of Running a Wildlife Sanctuary

Life at Hakuna Mipaka is not only about beautiful encounters and viral videos. The daily work involves:

  • Animal care and feeding
  • Veterinary treatment and health checks
  • Habitat management
  • Drought survival strategies
  • Ecosystem balance within the sanctuary

It’s a full-time commitment to wildlife management and ethical animal care.

Education and Global Awareness

Dean Schneider uses his online influence to raise wildlife awareness worldwide. His viral videos often show raw, authentic interactions — like playing with a lion or resting beside a cheetah — that break stereotypes and inspire empathy.

Future Plans for Hakuna Mipaka

Looking ahead, Dean plans to produce wildlife documentaries that will give viewers a deeper understanding of animal behavior and conservation challenges. His journey from a Swiss banker’s office to the African bush is a living example of how passion and commitment to animals can change the world.
