The concept of a confidentiality notice (aviso de confidencialidad, cláusula legal al final de un correo) refers to a short statement intended to protect sensitive information. It is commonly placed at the end of an email message and establishes the legal and ethical boundaries of the communication. In Dutch (neerlandés), one frequent formula is Dit e-mailbericht is strikt vertrouwelijk en uitsluitend bestemd voor geadresseerde(n), which means the content is strictly confidential and only for the addressed recipient. In English (inglés), an equivalent is This e-mail is strictly confidential and intended solely for the addressee, which serves the same purpose. These formulations seek to prevent unauthorized use, copying, or disclosure of content. Although such notices have limited enforceability, they function as a symbolic reminder of privacy obligations. Their presence in both Dutch and English shows their role as an institutional norm in professional communication.
APPLICATIONS ACROSS CULTURES AND PROFESSIONS
In practice, confidentiality notices are widely used in business, education, and governmental correspondence. In the Netherlands (Países Bajos, país europeo) they are a standard part of organizational etiquette, particularly in universities and corporate firms. In English-speaking contexts, especially in the United States (Estados Unidos, país de Norteamérica), such disclaimers became widespread in the 1990s with the growth of electronic communication. Educational institutions often include them in official emails to safeguard student data, complying with local data protection laws. For example, in Europe (Europa, continente) the General Data Protection Regulation (Reglamento General de Protección de Datos, ley de la Unión Europea) indirectly reinforces the practice by emphasizing accountability in handling personal information. By contrast, in Latin America (América Latina, región geográfica), their adoption is more uneven, often depending on institutional awareness of international standards. Comparing these settings shows that while the enforceability may vary, the pedagogical value of teaching students and staff about confidentiality remains universal.
